Putin vows to secure Russia as Ukraine intensifies deep strikes
His remarks came after a Ukrainian drone strike killed one person
Moscow: (Web Desk) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to strengthen Russia’s security and overcome growing challenges as Ukraine stepped up retaliatory drone strikes deep inside Russian territory.
Addressing the United Russia party congress on Sunday, Putin acknowledged the security threats facing the country but insisted Russia would protect its citizens and safeguard the country’s borders.
“We will undoubtedly overcome all the challenges facing us today, including terrorist attacks on our territory and infrastructure facilities,” Putin said.
His remarks came after a Ukrainian drone strike killed one person and sparked a fire at an oil refinery in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, according to local authorities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack was part of ongoing operations aimed at weakening Russia’s ability to continue the war. He said Ukrainian forces also struck the Slavyansk oil refinery in Krasnodar, around 300 kilometres from the frontline, and another refinery in Russia’s Yaroslavl region, about 700 kilometres from Ukraine’s border.
The latest attacks follow a major Ukrainian strike last week that triggered a large fire at a refinery southeast of Moscow, sending thick black smoke over nearby suburbs.
Meanwhile, Russian-annexed Crimea has declared a state of emergency amid increasing Ukrainian aerial attacks that have disrupted fuel supplies and caused power outages across the peninsula and other Russian-controlled areas.
