LAHORE: (News Desk) – The Punjab government has reportedly decided to register cases against people who throw or shower currency notes during dance performances, mujra shows, Qawwali nights and Mehfil-e-Naat gatherings.
According to media reports, the proposed action will cover both entertainment programmes and religious gatherings, with authorities seeking to discourage the practice at public events.
The reported move comes amid provincial authorities’ efforts to enforce regulations governing stage performances and public functions.
In September 2026, the Punjab Council of the Arts and the Information and Culture Department initiated action against stage performers and theatre managements in Lahore and Gujranwala over alleged violations of government policies, the Punjab Drama Act and prescribed standard operating procedures (SOPs). The notices reportedly included allegations of money being thrown onto stages and theatre managements failing to prevent the practice.
In a separate incident in October 2026, police in Sahiwal registered a case against an assistant sub-inspector and a shrine caretaker after a video allegedly showing currency notes being showered on dancers during an annual shrine festival circulated on social media.
According to Dawn, the police officer was arrested, while the case was registered under Section 294 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 155C of the Police Order.
The latest reported decision signals a possible expansion of enforcement measures against the practice at public performances and religious gatherings. However, an official notification confirming the decision, the applicable legal provisions and the penalties for violations could not be independently verified at the time of publication.
