Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Reacts Strongly to Rising Crime

LAHORE: (Web Desk) – Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken strict notice of a sudden increase in crime across Punjab, calling an emergency meeting to address the situation. During the session, she reviewed videos of recent incidents and expressed strong displeasure over the deteriorating law and order conditions.

The Chief Minister questioned senior police officials and directed them to adopt immediate preventive strategies to control crime. She specifically criticized the performance of police in Sheikhupura and Faisalabad, instructing relevant officers to ensure full coordination with the Crime Control Department (CCD) to restore order.

She termed the recent spike in crimes such as murder, robbery, kidnapping, and missing persons as alarming and unacceptable, emphasizing that even minor offenses must not be ignored. She added that Punjab had been made safer through consistent efforts, and any negligence at this stage would not be tolerated.

Highlighting reforms in the police system, she stated that law enforcement agencies are now free from political interference and are expected to deliver results purely on merit. She noted that despite resistance from various quarters, the government has ensured transparent appointments and provided police with necessary resources, including funds, equipment, and vehicles.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif stressed that ensuring public safety remains the government’s top priority, and reaffirmed her commitment to taking all necessary measures to improve security across the province. She also pointed out rising street crimes in areas like Gulberg and Gujrat, saying such incidents create fear among citizens and cannot be allowed to continue.

She further expressed concern over drug-related cases and questioned the effectiveness of initiatives like Safe City projects. Referring to a recent incident involving a Speedo bus conductor injuring a child, she remarked that stronger enforcement of law could prevent such occurrences.

The Chief Minister added that a record budget of Rs 527 billion has been allocated to the police over the past two years, and there should be visible improvement in performance and public safety as a result.
