Pakistan Sees Improved Electricity Supply Nationwide

Hydropower Boost Improves Electricity Supply, Power Division Says

Islamabad (Web Desk) – : The Power Division has reported a noticeable improvement in electricity supply across the country since April 17, attributing the progress to increased hydropower generation and improved grid stability.

According to a spokesperson, higher water releases from dams—carried out on the request of provincial authorities—have significantly boosted hydroelectric production. As a result, around 5,000 megawatts of electricity is currently being generated during night peak hours, helping reduce pressure on the national grid.

The spokesperson further stated that an additional 400 megawatts of surplus electricity from the southern region has been transmitted to central areas of the country, contributing to better overall system stability and smoother supply.

He noted that no load management was carried out during night peak hours on April 17, 18, and 19. However, on April 20, most distribution companies implemented only one hour of load management during peak demand, while Gujranwala Electric Power Company and Sukkur Electric Power Company enforced outages of up to two hours.

Despite the improvement, the Power Division highlighted that LNG-based power plants with a combined capacity of around 5,500 megawatts are currently not operational due to the unavailability of imported liquefied natural gas. These plants are expected to resume generation once LNG supplies are restored.

The spokesperson clarified that load management linked to electricity theft and system losses will continue under existing policy, even when fuel supplies normalize, and is separate from peak-hour load management.

Officials said efforts are ongoing to further strengthen the power system while addressing long-standing challenges related to distribution efficiency and fuel availability.
