Pakistan Moves Towards Green Yards and Ship Recycling Under Hong Kong Convention
Federal Minister and IMO Secretary General Visit Gadani Ship Breaking Yard
Gadani Ship Breaking Yard to Get Industrial Waste Management Plant and 30-Bedded Hospital,
Gadani-Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Qaiser Sheikh and Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Arsenio Dominguez visited the Gadani Ship Breaking Yard to launch the modernization project of the shipbreaking industry. The project, worth 12 billion rupees, aims to transform the industry into a green yard and promote ship recycling under the Hong Kong Convention.
The visit included a briefing on the operational and industrial activities of the Gadani Ship Breaking Yard, where the federal minister and IMO secretary general were received by Chairman BDA Capt. Retired Javed and other officials.
The modernization project includes the construction of an industrial waste management plant, a 30-bedded hospital, blacktop roads, and a new fire brigade station. A fire fighting training session was also conducted for the health and safety of laborers.
The process of modernization is expected to be completed by June 2025, and the guidelines of German firm GSR have been obtained for green yard planning.
The federal minister and IMO secretary general laid the foundation stone of the industrial waste management plant and the 30-bedded hospital, and visited Plot No. 64 of the Shipbreaking Yard to review the health and safety environmental laws of workers under the Hong Kong Convention.
