Pakistan, Cuba Celebrate Decades of Friendship at National Day Reception in Havana

Cultural Performances, Photo Exhibit Highlight Pak-Cuba Ties

ISLAMABAD, April 9 (APP) — Pakistan’s Ambassador to Cuba, Shahzad Malik, praised the enduring and friendly relations between Pakistan and Cuba, which span over seven decades, during a Pakistan Day reception held in Havana. The event highlighted the strength of bilateral ties and the deep-rooted solidarity between the two nations.

Speaking at the reception, Ambassador Malik expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Cuban government and people for their invaluable support during the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan. He recalled how Cuban medical teams provided critical assistance and how former President Fidel Castro announced scholarships for Pakistani students pursuing medical studies in Cuba — a gesture that continues to benefit many to this day.

The reception was attended by Cuba’s Minister for Domestic Trade, Betsy Diaz Velazquez, and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elio Rodriguez Perdomo, along with nearly 200 guests including officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX), other government bodies, diplomatic missions, and local institutions.

The event commenced with the national anthems of Cuba and Pakistan, performed by Pakistani medical students currently studying in Cuba. A short documentary on Pakistan was screened, receiving appreciation from the audience for showcasing the country’s heritage, resilience, and potential.

In celebration of cultural ties, Pakistani students performed traditional dances to popular Pakistani songs, offering a vibrant glimpse into the nation’s rich artistic traditions. A photographic exhibition was also featured, displaying key moments of cooperation, including high-level visits and the humanitarian efforts of Cuban medical professionals in the aftermath of the 2005 earthquake.
