National Assembly Denies Funding MPs’ Hajj or Umrah

Parliament Secretariat Confirms MPs Self-Fund Annual Religious Visits

Islamabad (Web Desk) -: The National Assembly Secretariat has clarified that recent reports in print and electronic media suggesting that parliamentary delegations perform Umrah or Hajj at government expense are completely baseless.

According to the Secretariat spokesperson, no such facility exists, nor can it be provided, for Members of the National Assembly to undertake Hajj or Umrah at state expense.

The spokesperson explained that, under a resolution passed by the National Assembly in November 2016, a parliamentary delegation visits Roza-e-Rasool (ﷺ) on 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal each year, entirely at their own expense. All members of the delegation bear their personal costs, and no financial burden is placed on the national exchequer.

Under the approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the Ministry of Religious Affairs only provides administrative facilitation, without covering any travel or other expenses related to the visit.

The spokesperson emphasized that any suggestion regarding government-funded visits may reflect the personal opinion of an individual member, but no such proposal has been approved by the Assembly.

This clarification confirms that parliamentary visits for religious purposes are strictly self-funded, maintaining transparency and accountability regarding public funds.
