Just a day before the restoration, he addressed party workers in Mirpur. He said both protesters and the government were punishing ordinary citizens through this long shutdown.

His words struck a chord with many locals who had grown tired of the prolonged silence. Weeks without internet had disrupted work, school, and even emergency communication.

The timing of this restoration is no accident. Azad Kashmir is preparing for elections starting next week, and connectivity plays a key role in campaign outreach.

AJK Chief Election Commissioner Ghulam Mustafa Mughal announced the voting schedule on July 21. He confirmed elections will take place in three separate phases.

Mirpur Division leads the way, voting first on July 27. Muzaffarabad Division follows on August 2, with Poonch Division wrapping up the process on August 10.

The internet and cellular shutdown began last month following violent protests. The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee, known as JAAC, led the demonstrations.

JAAC demanded the removal of 12 refugee seats reserved in the AJK Assembly. These seats are set aside for people who migrated from Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir after 1947.

As tensions rose, the AJK government took a firm stance. Officials banned JAAC entirely, labeling it a proscribed group under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The ban came just days before JAAC’s planned protest on June 9. That demonstration was also aimed at scrapping the 12 reserved refugee seats.

With services now restored in Mirpur, residents are hopeful the rest of the region will follow soon. Many are watching closely to see if Muzaffarabad gets the same relief before its election date arrives.

For now, the return of mobile and internet access marks a small but meaningful win for a community that had gone weeks without a voice.
