Martinez Backs Ronaldo Ahead of Sixth World Cup

Martinez Hails Ronaldo’s Dedication Before Sixth World Cup Campaign

WASHINGTON: (Web Desk) – Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has thrown his full support behind Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the veteran forward as a role model for football and a crucial figure in the national team’s World Cup ambitions.

As Portugal prepares for its opening World Cup match against DR Congo, Martinez praised Ronaldo’s dedication and commitment, saying the 41-year-old is approaching his sixth World Cup with the enthusiasm and determination of a debutant.

Martinez highlighted Ronaldo’s leadership qualities and importance in Portugal’s attacking system, insisting that his experience, movement, and ability inside the penalty area continue to make him a key asset for the team.

Despite ongoing debates regarding Ronaldo’s role due to his recent scoring drought in major tournaments, the Portugal coach maintained that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains the best option to lead the attack.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes also paid tribute to Ronaldo, recalling how he inspired an entire generation of Portuguese footballers during Euro 2004. Fernandes said playing alongside Ronaldo is an honour and emphasized the squad’s collective determination to support both their captain and the national team’s quest for World Cup success.

Portugal enters the tournament among the favorites, boasting a talented squad that includes Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Bernardo Silva. Fernandes expressed confidence in the team’s quality and unity, stating that while winning the World Cup remains a dream, it is a realistic ambition for the squad.
