Major Routes Blocked Ahead of PTI Islamabad March
Key Highways Sealed As PTI Islamabad March Approaches
ISLAMABAD: (Mudassar Iqbal) – Major roads and motorways linking Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with Punjab and Islamabad have been closed at several points as authorities step up security ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s planned September 27 march.
According to the National Highways and Motorway Police, the M-1 Motorway has been closed to all traffic in both directions between the Islamabad Toll Plaza and Chachh Interchange until further notice. Several interchanges along the route have also been shut.
The affected M-1 points include the Islamabad Toll Plaza, Fateh Jang/Tarnol, Sangjani/AWT, Brahma Bahter, Burhan, Hazara Motorway, Ghazi and Chachh interchanges.
The M-14 Motorway, also known as the Hakla-Dera Ismail Khan or CPEC route, has likewise been closed in both directions between Hakla and Kundal. The Hakla, Fateh Jang, Pindi Gheb, Kharpa, Tarap, Daud Khel, Kot Belian, Isa Khel and Kundal interchanges are also closed.
The GT Road (N-5) has been blocked in both directions at Attock Khurd, while other routes connecting KP with Islamabad have also faced restrictions. The Hazara Motorway has been blocked near its interchange, while the Abbottabad-Hassanabdal Road has been closed at Jhari Kas and the Rawalpindi-Kohat Road at Khushalgarh.
Containers and other barriers have been placed at key entry points, including bridges and interchanges, as part of the security arrangements. Authorities have also deployed police personnel along important routes and near the blocked points. Dawn reported that containers and sandbags were placed at Attock and Haroon bridges, key links between KP and Punjab.
The closures come ahead of PTI’s planned September 27 march towards Islamabad. Authorities have said the affected routes will remain closed until further notice.
