Lamine Yamal Inspires Barcelona to Thrash Galatasaray 4-1 in Istanbul
Barcelona Thrash Galatasaray as Yamal Leads Second-Half Attacking Surge
Istanbul: (Sports Desk) – Barcelona produced an impressive second-half performance to secure a convincing 4-1 victory over Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League in Istanbul on Tuesday, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal playing a decisive role in the comeback.
After struggling to maintain their rhythm during a tense first half at Ali Sami Yen Stadium, Barcelona found their attacking spark after the break. Yamal repeatedly troubled the home defence, creating opportunities and helping his side take control of the contest.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick praised the youngster’s influence, saying it was incredible to have players of his quality in the team. Flick added that Yamal had turned the match around for the Catalan side.
The victory moved Barcelona to the top of the Champions League standings with two wins, while Galatasaray remained without a point after their latest defeat.
“We’re at a very high level. We have to keep going; the season is very long. We can’t relax,” Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez told Spanish broadcaster Movistar after the match.
Barcelona began brightly and controlled much of the opening period, although Galatasaray worked hard to limit Yamal’s influence on the right flank. Several of the visitors’ attacks instead developed down the opposite side.
Despite Barcelona’s early dominance, Galatasaray broke the deadlock in the 27th minute. Following a counter-attack initiated after Anthony Gordon went down inside the penalty area, Rafael Leao advanced on the left and delivered a pass towards the edge of the box. Aleksei Batrakov struck from there, with his effort taking a deflection off Joao Cancelo before finding the net.
The goal briefly shifted the momentum in Galatasaray’s favour, and the hosts increased the pressure. Victor Osimhen appeared to score with a header from a corner, but Baris Yilmaz was ruled offside after helping the ball over the line.
Barcelona eventually restored parity when a loose ball reached Dani Olmo following an incident involving Yamal near the edge of the penalty area. Olmo then played Cancelo through, and the defender finished to bring the visitors back into the contest.
Yamal became increasingly influential after half-time. He initially created an opportunity for Gordon, who failed to capitalise, before helping Barcelona take the lead in the 50th minute. The young winger delivered a delicate, curling cross that Fermin Lopez headed into the net.
Fermin later praised his teammate’s ability to create chances, describing Yamal as both a close friend and an outstanding footballer. He said he always looked to make forward runs when Yamal had possession and added that their strong relationship off the pitch was reflected in their performances together.
Just three minutes later, Yamal produced another moment of brilliance, beating Eren Elmali repeatedly in a confined space before slipping a pass to Gordon in front of goal. The England forward made no mistake with his finish, extending Barcelona’s advantage as the home defender could only react in frustration.
Barcelona added a fourth goal in the 65th minute. Yamal cut inside from the right and sent the ball towards substitute striker Gabriel Jesus. Although Jesus could not control the pass, the ball fell to Karim Adeyemi, who fired it into the net to complete the scoring.
Flick said Yamal regularly created similar opportunities during training and that his influence in matches was therefore unsurprising. The Barcelona coach also acknowledged the attention the teenager attracts, given his exceptional quality.
Yamal had opportunities to get on the scoresheet himself but sent one effort over the crossbar after reacting quickest to a loose ball.
Although the 19-year-old finished without a goal, his performance underlined his importance to Barcelona’s attacking play. He also took over the captain’s armband again after Pedri was substituted, having become the club’s youngest-ever captain in the previous round.
Barcelona’s emphatic win highlighted their ability to recover from a difficult spell and strengthened their position in the Champions League, while Yamal once again demonstrated why he is considered one of the team’s most influential players.
