Lahore Flour Prices Surge Amid Wheat Supply Crisis

Wheat Prices Exceed Official Rates Amid Hoarding Allegations In Lahore

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – The wheat and flour shortage in Lahore is worsening despite the ongoing harvesting and flour production season, as flour prices continue to rise sharply amid accusations of hoarding and artificial market manipulation.

According to market reports, wheat prices in Lahore have reached Rs3,850 per maund, considerably above the official government rate of Rs3,500 per maund. Traders and buyers claim wheat is unavailable at the notified price due to the alleged role of hoarders and influential market groups.

The limited availability of wheat at controlled prices has started increasing flour rates across the city, adding further pressure on consumers already struggling with inflation.

Sources in the flour industry said mill owners have fixed the ex-mill price of a 10-kilogram flour bag at Rs990, while retailers are selling the same bag for over Rs1,080 in local markets.

Likewise, the price of a 15-kilogram flour bag has climbed to Rs1,600, while the ex-mill rate for a 20-kilogram bag has reached Rs2,225. In retail markets, the same 20-kilogram bag is now being sold for more than Rs2,300.

Market figures show that within nearly six weeks, the price of a 20-kilogram flour bag has jumped from Rs1,810 to above Rs2,300, highlighting a major increase in the cost of essential food items.

Citizens have voiced serious concern over the rapid rise in flour prices despite expectations of strong wheat production this year. Consumers are demanding immediate government action against hoarding and unfair market practices to ensure the supply of wheat and flour at official rates.

Traders and industry experts warn that if authorities fail to crack down on hoarding and supply chain manipulation, flour prices could increase even further in the coming weeks, placing additional financial strain on households across Punjab.
