Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Reiterates Commitment to Acquire PIA

Gandapur Claims Strong Financial Position as Justification for Acquisition

Peshawar-(Staff Reporter): Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has reaffirmed his intentions to acquire Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). He noted that the province owns two helicopters and expressed the government’s commitment to pursue the acquisition, stating they would “go to any length” to make it happen. Gandapur assured that if the purchase is successful, the airline will retain its PIA branding.

He also claimed that the Sharif family is covertly trying to buy the airline, stating, “The cat is out of the bag.” He highlighted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s robust financial standing, asserting that the province has a surplus budget and achieves 100% revenue collection.

Looking forward, the Chief Minister announced a significant gathering in Swabi on November 9, where a resolution will be passed, and further plans regarding PIA will be revealed. He emphasized that this action will be a decisive, one-time move.

In contrast, Punjab’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Azma Bukhari, has dismissed any claims that the provincial government intends to purchase PIA. She clarified that discussions have only focused on Air Punjab.

Bukhari raised concerns about the practicality of a debt-ridden province like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa buying PIA, remarking, “It’s strange that a province burdened with billions in debt wants to acquire PIA. PIA operates airplanes; we’re not discussing other types of assets. You can’t even pay other institutions.”

Additionally, she mentioned that the Punjab government is actively addressing smog issues, pointing out that Lahore is currently the second most polluted city, with Delhi being the first.
