Karachi police to book drivers without number plates

Sindh police tighten action against vehicles without number plates

Karachi: (Web Desk) – Javed Alam Odho has announced stricter action against motorists driving without number plates, stating that violators will now be formally booked instead of merely being issued challans.

Speaking to a private TV channel, the IG said a targeted campaign is underway across the city to identify such offenders, with assistance from Safe City surveillance systems. Authorities are using advanced monitoring to track vehicles that either lack number plates or deliberately obscure them.

He warned that individuals attempting to evade e-challan systems by hiding, altering, or tampering with number plates will face strict legal action. Repeat violators, in particular, will be dealt with firmly under the law.

Odho highlighted the expansion of the city’s surveillance network, noting that the number of CCTV cameras has increased from 30,000 to 40,000. He also urged traders and business owners to install additional cameras to further strengthen monitoring and security.

Discussing traffic enforcement, he said e-challan fines in Sindh have been aligned with those in Punjab, where penalties have recently been increased.

On the law and order front, the IG revealed that CCTV surveillance has contributed to solving around 70 percent of criminal cases. He noted an overall decline in extortion incidents, with only a few cases recently reported in District Central.

He further stated that authorities are intensifying efforts against notorious extortionists operating from abroad. Red warrants have been issued for several suspects, and arrests are expected soon. Facilitators of these criminal networks within Karachi will also be taken into custody.
