Jayawardene Ends Second Stint as Mumbai Indians Head Coach

Three-Time IPL Champion Jayawardene Steps Down From Mumbai Indians Role

MUMBAI: (Sports Desk) – Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as head coach of Mumbai Indians, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise announced on Saturday, bringing his latest stint with the team to an end.

The 49-year-old former Sri Lanka captain first coached Mumbai Indians from 2017 to 2022, guiding the franchise to three IPL titles during that period.

However, Jayawardene was unable to replicate that success after returning to the role in 2024. Mumbai Indians finished fourth in 2025 before exiting in the playoffs, while the team ended the 2026 campaign in the second-bottom position.

In a statement, Jayawardene reflected on his time with the franchise and expressed pride in the achievements they had shared.

“Together, we have shared some unforgettable moments, overcome challenges and built something we can all be proud of,” he said.

“I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead.”

Jayawardene’s departure follows a difficult recent period for the five-time IPL champions, who will now look ahead to the next season following their disappointing 2026 campaign.
