Japan’s Strategic Role in Regional Stability Discussed at ISSI Lecture

ISLAMABAD: The China-Pakistan Study Centre (CPSC) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) hosted a guest lecture titled “Japan’s Perspective on Regional Issues” on January 8. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Kawashima Shin from the University of Tokyo and was attended by Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi, Japan’s Ambassador to Pakistan.

In his welcome remarks, Director General of ISSI Ambassador Sohail Mahmood emphasized the deep-rooted ties between Pakistan and Japan, pointing out the long history of mutual respect, shared interests, and collaboration in various sectors, including trade, investment, climate change, and cultural exchanges. He also highlighted the importance of fostering academic and policy dialogues to further strengthen the partnership.

Ambassador Akamatsu expressed his appreciation for the relationship between the two countries and acknowledged ISSI’s role in promoting scholarly exchanges.

Prof. Dr. Kawashima Shin focused on Japan’s transformation from the Meiji Restoration to its post-World War II resurgence and discussed Japan’s commitment to peace, democracy, and regional cooperation. He also touched upon Japan’s evolving role in East Asia, emphasizing the importance of balanced diplomacy and economic interdependence to ensure regional stability.

Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director of CPSC, noted Japan’s significant contributions to Pakistan’s development through Official Development Assistance (ODA) and cultural exchanges, underscoring their mutual commitment to addressing shared challenges.

The event attracted a diverse audience of scholars, policymakers, and media members, all keen to engage in the ongoing discourse on regional stability and international cooperation.
