Iran War Likely To Delay Planned Trump Xi Summit Talks

US may postpone Trump Xi summit as Iran war grows and the Strait of Hormuz crisis deepens.

US & China – (Web Desk) – US officials said on Monday that the planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may be delayed because of the war between the United States and Iran.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that the meeting could happen later than planned. She said the summit is not at risk of being canceled. It is mostly a question of timing.

On Sunday, Trump told the Financial Times that the visit might be pushed back. He said the delay could give time to see if China will help reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has mostly blocked this key route for oil tankers.

China has strong links with Iran and buys a large share of its oil. Because of this, the United States hopes Beijing might help ease the problem.

Earlier on Monday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said the summit planned for March 31 to April 2 may not happen as scheduled.

Still, Bessent said the meeting is not being delayed to pressure China about the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to CNBC from Paris, he said a presidential trip abroad may not be the best choice while the United States is dealing with a war.

He said officials will decide soon if the visit will take place on the planned dates. He also said reports claiming the delay is meant to push China to control the waterway are not true.

Bessent explained that if the summit is moved, it would likely be because of travel and planning issues. He said the president wants to stay in Washington, D.C. to manage the war effort.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important routes for oil shipments. Because of the war with Iran, the passage has become unsafe.

There have been small attacks on ships and warnings about sea mines. As a result, only a few vessels are now using the route. The US military admits it cannot fully secure the narrow waterway at the moment, and Trump has been urging other countries to help protect it.
