The government of India has once again increased petrol and diesel prices, marking the fourth fuel price hike within just 11 days as global crude oil prices remain high and the Indian rupee continues to weaken.
According to Indian media reports, state-owned oil marketing companies raised petrol prices by Rs2.61 per litre and diesel prices by Rs2.71 per litre on Monday across major cities.
With the latest increase, total fuel price hikes since May 15 have now reached nearly Rs7.5 per litre, ending a long period during which retail fuel rates had remained unchanged.
In New Delhi, petrol prices climbed to Rs102.12 per litre from Rs99.51, while diesel rates rose to Rs95.20 per litre from Rs92.49.
Fuel prices also surged in other metropolitan cities. In Kolkata, petrol prices increased to Rs113.51 per litre, while diesel reached Rs99.82 per litre.

In Mumbai, petrol prices rose to Rs111.21 per litre and diesel climbed to Rs97.83 per litre. Meanwhile, in Chennai, petrol prices reached Rs107.77 per litre and diesel touched Rs99.55 per litre.
Industry experts say rising international crude oil prices and the depreciation of the Indian rupee have significantly increased import costs for oil companies, forcing repeated upward revisions in retail fuel prices.
The latest adjustment follows earlier hikes announced on May 15, May 19 and May 23, when petrol and diesel prices were gradually increased after months of stability.
The continuous rise in fuel prices is expected to place additional pressure on inflation, transportation costs and household expenses across India.
