Imran Khan Mumbai Protest: Bollywood Actor Asked to Leave India
The Bollywood actor, a US citizen, has reportedly been given until October 28 to leave the country after joining a rally against the election commission chief.
Mumbai – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – The Imran Khan Mumbai protest has put the Bollywood actor in trouble with Indian authorities. Local media say he has been asked to leave the country by the end of this month.
The news came out on Thursday. The Indian Express reported that the 43-year-old actor holds US citizenship. Under Indian law, a foreigner who takes part in a political protest can be seen as breaking visa and immigration rules.
The Times of India said he was given until October 28 to leave India.
The actor joined a rally in Mumbai on October 10. The protesters wanted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. They are unhappy about the recent changes to voter lists. Opposition parties and critics say these changes favour Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party.
On the same day, Imran shared a photo on Instagram. He is seen making a victory sign, apparently inside a police van. He wrote that he was going for a drive.
Soon after, a complaint was filed at a Mumbai police station. It said the actor had broken the law. The Foreigners Regional Registration Office, a federal agency that tracks foreign nationals in India, then sent him a notice to leave. The Indian Express reported these details.
Imran did not immediately reply to a request for comment from Reuters.
He comes from a well-known film family and is the nephew of actor Aamir Khan. Imran starred in several hit films between 2008 and 2015. Then he suddenly stepped away from acting.
It is not yet clear how he will respond to the notice. Fans and critics are now watching closely to see what happens before the October 28 deadline.
