IESCO Intensifies Crackdown on Power Theft, Over 4,000 Arrested

IESCO CEO Urges Public to Report Power Theft, Calls for Active Participation

Islamabad: The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has ramped up its efforts to combat power theft, a practice that has been severely affecting both the financial stability and technical infrastructure of the region. IESCO CEO Muhammad Naeem Jan announced that the utility company has been taking aggressive measures to curb illegal electricity use, which has been a major barrier to the country’s economic growth.

Speaking at a press briefing, Naeem Jan explained that the crackdown on power pilfering, launched in September 2023 in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, has made significant progress. Since the campaign’s inception, IESCO’s detection teams have inspected over 2.65 million meters across various tariff categories, leading to the identification and apprehension of 4,245 individuals involved in power theft. Of those, 3,811 were found to be using direct power supply, while 434 had tampered or slowed down their meters to evade detection.

The CEO revealed that the total fine levied on these power pilferers has reached Rs. 362.92 million. In addition, IESCO has registered 3,296 FIRs, and law enforcement authorities have arrested 2,292 individuals linked to these illegal activities.

“We are fully committed to eradicating power theft from our region,” emphasized Naeem Jan. “This ongoing anti-power theft campaign will continue with the same dedication until we achieve our goal of completely eliminating power theft in IESCO’s service area.”

He urged them to report any suspicious activities to the relevant Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) offices, or to reach out through the IESCO Help Line at 118 or the CCMC contact numbers 051-9252933-34.

This initiative is seen as a crucial step towards stabilizing Pakistan’s power sector, reducing financial losses, and contributing to the country’s broader economic recovery.
