Historic Cross-Party Meeting at Westminster Unites Key Stakeholders for Grenfell-Affected Community

Tuesday 2nd June 2025 | Wilson Room, Portcullis House, Palace of Westminster, London

In a landmark gathering on Tuesday evening, 2nd June 2025, political leaders from across the spectrum, local authority representatives, and community members came together for the first time in eight years to address the ongoing challenges faced by residents of Lancaster West Estate (LWE), home to the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

The meeting, convened by Hon. Alderman Mushtaq Lasharie CBE, Chairperson of the Lancaster West Residents Association (LWRA), was held with the support of Hon. Kevin Hollinrake MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Housing and Communities, and Hon. Joe Powell MP for Kensington and Bayswater. The discussion was centred around “The Future of Grenfell Tower Fire-Affected Communities.”

For the first time since the catastrophic fire of 14th June 2017, all key stakeholders — including central government representatives from the Labour Party, opposition leadership from the Conservative Party, local authority leaders from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), and the residents themselves — shared the same platform.

Notably, the meeting also welcomed young people from the community, including those who were under the age of 10 during the time of the tragedy, symbolising the importance of intergenerational healing and accountability.

Prominent Speakers and Commitments

Speakers included:

  • Hon. Alex Norris MP, Minister for Building Safety and Grenfell, representing the Labour-led Central Government

  • Hon. Kevin Hollinrake MP, Shadow Secretary for Housing and Communities

  • Cllr. Elizabeth Campbell, Leader of RBKC

  • Cllr. Sof McVeigh, Lead Member for Housing at RBKC

  • Cllr. Kasim Ali, Leader of the Labour Group in RBKC

  • Cllr. Marwan Elnaghi, RBKC Labour Opposition

  • Hon. Joe Powell MP, Kensington and Bayswater

  • Baroness Scott

  • Lord Rami Ranger FRSA

  • Hon. Florence Eshalomi MP, Chairwoman of the Housing Select Committee in Parliament

Each speaker acknowledged the pain and enduring trauma within the community and reiterated their commitment to collaborative action. They unanimously pledged to work alongside LWRA to honour the promises made in the aftermath of the tragedy and deliver a future worthy of the survivors and wider community.

Community Demands and Powerful Words

Chairperson Mushtaq Lasharie CBE delivered a powerful and emotional address, asserting the need for “a model 21st-century home that our residents were promised and deserve.”

He stressed the symbolic and practical importance of this inaugural cross-party meeting:

“This is the first time in eight years we have all sat together. If you do not deliver on the promises made to this community, we will return, not as individuals, but in thousands, to demand justice.”

The event also saw heartfelt contributions from resident representatives, including young people who spoke of the lingering psychological and social impacts of the fire.

Media Attention and Next Steps

The BBC is continuing coverage of the meeting and the commitments made, which have reignited national attention on the Grenfell recovery and justice process. There is cautious optimism that this unified approach could mark a turning point for the community, provided words are matched with real, measurable progress.

This historic meeting marks a new chapter — but for the residents of LWE, it is only the beginning of a renewed push for justice, dignity, and the secure future they were long promised.
