Field Marshal Munir in Tehran as Makkah Security Pact Nations Meet Iran
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye send top officials to Tehran as the long Middle East war remains stuck
Tehran – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – Iran has started talks with the three members of the Makkah security pact. These are Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye. The meeting began on Monday in Tehran, according to Iranian state television.
Pakistan asked for this meeting. The talks focus on regional cooperation and the effects of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran.
Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, shared the names of the guests. He said Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman would attend. Pakistan’s top military leader, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, would also be there. Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin completes the group.

Pakistan’s military media wing, the ISPR, confirmed earlier in the day that Field Marshal Munir was visiting Tehran.
Bagheri Kani also said Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, would join the talks. He is expected to be present at all the meetings.
The visiting delegates also met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The presidential website shared photos of that meeting.
Why These Talks Matter
The war is now almost eight months old. It began in late February after US and Israeli attacks on Iran. Tehran then blocked the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict has shaken global markets and energy trade. Before the war, about one fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passed through this narrow sea route.
An April ceasefire stopped the first and most violent phase of the fighting. But peace did not follow. Both sides are still competing for control of the strait.
HRH Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Minister of Defense, leads the Kingdom’s delegation to the meetings that will be held today in Tehran, capital of Iran, between Makkah Joint Defense Agreement countries and officials from the Islamic Republic of Iran, with participation of Field Marshall Asim Munir, Pakistani Chief of Army Staff and Ibrahim Kalin, Director of the Turkish National Intelligence.
Representatives of Makkah Joint Defense Agreement countries will meet with the H.E. President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, and H.E. the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Mohsen Rezaei.
The visit comes as part of the continued efforts by the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement countries for de-escalation between parties involved in the ongoing crisis, and promoting dialogue and diplomatic solutions, in support of the mediation efforts carried out by the State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The visit underscore the pivotal role of Makkah Joint Defense Agreement countries in reinforcing regional security and stability, and working with all countries in the region to achieve that goal.

Iran says it controls the waterway. It often targets ships that try to cross without its permission. The United States has answered with a naval blockade of Iranian ports.
A War That Keeps Spreading
The fighting has not stayed inside Iran. It has now reached other parts of the region.
Saudi Arabia is fighting the Houthis in Yemen. The Houthis have attacked airports and oil sites inside the kingdom.
This is one reason Riyadh wants a calmer path. The Makkah security pact brings Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkiye together, and this visit is part of their push to reduce tension.
What Saudi Arabia Said
Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy Dr Rayed Krimly confirmed the visit. He said the defence minister was leading a delegation to Tehran on Monday.
In a post on X, he said the visit is part of ongoing efforts by the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement countries. Their aim is to ease tension between the sides involved.

He added that the trip supports dialogue and diplomatic solutions. It also backs the mediation work already done by Qatar and Pakistan.
Peace Efforts Remain Stuck
Diplomacy has made little progress in recent months. The biggest setback came when a June deal fell apart. That deal had outlined a path toward a permanent settlement.
Since then, talks have stalled. The Makkah security pact meeting in Tehran is a new attempt to restart the conversation.
