Federal Sharia Court Declares Attempted Suicide Law Amendments Un-Islamic
ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – Federal Sharia Court has issued a major ruling regarding legislation on attempted suicide, declaring the 2022 amendments that decriminalized the act null and void.
The verdict was announced by a bench comprising Chief Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman, Justice Anwar Iqbal, and Justice Amir Khan.
While delivering the reserved judgment, the Federal Sharia Court accepted all petitions challenging the amendments and ruled that the government’s legislation was contrary to Islamic principles.
Lahore Courts Face Rising Burden Of Pending Cases
According to the decision, the court restored the previously deleted provision of the criminal law that treated attempted suicide as a punishable offence.
The ruling also declared invalid the clause introduced in 2022 that had removed criminal penalties related to attempted suicide.
Under the judgment, the earlier section of the Criminal Code criminalizing attempted suicide has now been reinstated.
