Fakhar Zaman Dismisses Retirement Rumors, Vows to Make Full Recovery

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s left-handed opener, Fakhar Zaman, has dismissed recent “baseless reports” suggesting he is considering retirement after sustaining an injury during the opening match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.

Fakhar, who made his highly anticipated return to the national team in the recently held home tri-nation ODI series, was ruled out of the Champions Trophy following an injury he sustained while fielding during Pakistan’s match against New Zealand in Karachi on February 19. Fakhar fell awkwardly while fielding in the opening over, requiring medical evaluation and an eventual withdrawal from the game. Although he briefly returned to the field, he had to exit again due to fitness concerns.

Scans later revealed that Fakhar had suffered an oblique tear, forcing his withdrawal just before Pakistan’s crucial match against India on February 23 in Dubai. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Fakhar would miss the remainder of the tournament, with Imam-ul-Haq named as his replacement.

In response to media speculation about his retirement, Fakhar, currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), has vehemently denied the rumors. “There is no truth in the retirement news,” Fakhar stated. “I will be fully fit and join the team soon.”

Fakhar Zaman, who debuted internationally in 2017, has represented Pakistan in three Tests, 86 ODIs, and 92 T20Is, amassing 5691 runs across formats, including 11 centuries and 30 fifties. He remains committed to making a full recovery and returning to the national team.
