Pakistan urges US and Iran to extend ceasefire

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has called on the United States and Iran to consider extending the ongoing temporary ceasefire, stressing that continued calm is essential to create space for meaningful diplomacy.

The appeal came during a meeting with US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker, where both sides held detailed discussions on the evolving regional situation. Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance that dialogue and diplomatic engagement remain the only viable path to resolving disputes and ensuring long-term stability.

Highlighting the importance of direct engagement, he urged Washington and Tehran to maintain communication and take practical measures to de-escalate tensions. He emphasized that extending the ceasefire could help build trust and pave the way for productive negotiations.

During the meeting, the US diplomat acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive efforts in promoting peace and facilitating dialogue between the two sides.

Meanwhile, uncertainty still surrounds the expected second round of US-Iran talks, which Pakistan has offered to host. Despite the lack of formal confirmation from Tehran, preparations in Islamabad have been completed, with authorities anticipating the arrival of high-level delegations.

According to international media reports, including Al Jazeera and Reuters, the situation remains fluid ahead of the anticipated talks. Some reports suggest that an Iranian delegation could arrive soon, while Pakistani officials remain hopeful of securing Tehran’s participation.

There are also indications that if progress is made toward a potential agreement, senior US leadership — possibly including Donald Trump — could join the negotiations at a later stage.
