US Approves $5 Billion Saudi Arms Sale Amid Tensions
State Department says the deal will boost Riyadh's air defenses and strengthen ties with Gulf partners.
US & KSA – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – The United States has given the green light to a $5 billion Saudi arms sale, covering bombs, guidance kits, and other military hardware bound for Riyadh. The move comes as Saudi Arabia faces growing pressure from regional threats.
According to the US State Department, the deal will help Saudi Arabia improve its airborne defense system. Officials say it will also strengthen the kingdom’s homeland security and allow its forces to work more smoothly with American troops and other Gulf allies.
The department added that the sale supports Washington’s broader foreign policy goals. It also helps protect a country the US treats as a Major Non-NATO Ally, a status that reflects close military cooperation between the two nations.
Before the deal can move forward, it still needs a nod from US lawmakers. The State Department has already sent formal notice to Congress, kicking off the review period required for foreign military sales of this size.
The timing is notable. Saudi Arabia has faced repeated drone and missile attacks linked to the ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, along with continued threats from Houthi forces based in Yemen. The kingdom has been working to shore up its air defenses in response.
This is not the first arms package Washington has cleared for Riyadh in recent years, but it adds to a growing list of defense agreements between the two longtime allies.
