Peshawar is facing another rise in live chicken prices, adding further pressure on residents who are already struggling with inflation. This increase is making it challenging for them to afford what used to be a staple food.
The price of live chicken has climbed to Rs440 per kilogram, leading to a significant drop in sales as many consumers struggle with the rising costs.
Local shopkeepers have noted a sharp decline in sales, with only hotel owners continuing to buy chicken in bulk. “Inflation has made it nearly impossible for ordinary people to purchase chicken,” said one local shopkeeper.
Consumers have voiced their frustration over the continuous increase in prices, noting that the current economic conditions have made it difficult to buy basic necessities, such as chicken, which was once within reach for most households.
In a related development, the Lahore High Court addressed a case concerning the pricing of chicken meat. Justice Sajid Mehmood Sethi oversaw the hearing of a miscellaneous application from the Pakistan Poultry Association, which requested the implementation of a regulated system to control chicken prices in Punjab.
The court has issued notices to all relevant parties and asked them to respond to various petitions. The hearing underscored the absence of an official system to regulate chicken meat prices, resulting in unpredictable market fluctuations.
With prices rising sharply in major cities like Peshawar, consumers are urging the government to step in and tackle the inflation affecting essential food items like chicken. The court’s decision on regulating chicken prices in Punjab could set a precedent for price controls nationwide.
