Changsha Fireworks Factory Blast Kills 21, Injures Dozens in China
Changsha Fireworks Factory Blast Triggers Presidential Probe and Safety Crackdown
China – (Web Desk) – A deadly Changsha fireworks factory blast has shaken China after an explosion tore through a manufacturing plant in Hunan province on Monday afternoon, killing 21 people and leaving 61 others injured.
The explosion hit the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company at around 4:40 pm local time. Videos shared online showed massive clouds of black smoke rising above the ruins of collapsed buildings, with wreckage scattered across a wide area.
Close to 500 firefighters, rescue teams, and medical staff rushed to the scene to help survivors and manage the aftermath.
President Xi Jinping responded quickly, calling for a thorough investigation to find out what caused the disaster. He also demanded strict accountability and ordered authorities to improve safety checks across high-risk industries to protect lives and prevent future tragedies.
The incident puts a spotlight on China’s massive fireworks industry. Last year alone, the country exported over $1.14 billion worth of fireworks — accounting for more than two-thirds of global sales. With such a large share of world production, safety standards in Chinese factories have come under renewed scrutiny.
Just last week, Xi had already called for a national upgrade in disaster response capabilities. This latest tragedy makes that push even more urgent.
