GB Election Commission holds all parties conference before 2026 elections

GILGIT: (News Desk) – The Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission held an All Parties Conference in Gilgit ahead of the 2026 elections, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan.

The meeting was attended by Provincial Election Commissioner Abid Raza, senior officials, and representatives from various political and religious parties across the region.

During the session, Raja Shahbaz Khan briefed participants on preparations for the upcoming Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, highlighting steps taken to ensure a transparent, impartial, and fair electoral process. He also shared key provisions of the code of conduct for political parties, candidates, and polling agents, stressing strict compliance.

He announced a ban on the use of panaflex banners and excessive campaign materials, warning that violations would result in legal action. He emphasized that the Commission is committed to upholding the rule of law throughout the election process.

The Chief Election Commissioner further revealed that a modern monitoring system has been introduced to oversee electoral activities and prevent irregularities in a timely manner. He reiterated the Commission’s resolve to conduct credible elections using all available resources.

Speaking later at a press conference, Raja Shahbaz Khan said political stakeholders appreciated the Commission’s preparations and assured full cooperation to ensure peaceful and transparent elections.

Responding to media queries, he announced that long-awaited local government elections will be held on June 14, 2026, marking the first such polls in 25 years. Preparations are progressing rapidly, with around 1,989 seats to be contested, including reserved representation for women.

For the elections, authorities have established 164 union councils, 10 district councils, and 3 municipal corporations. A total of 3,048 polling stations will be set up, with approximately 13,000 officials deployed to manage the process efficiently.

He also clarified that government employees will not be allowed to participate in election campaigns, warning that any violation would lead to disciplinary action.
