Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau Struggles After NDP Pulls Backing
Opposition Conservatives Push for Early Election Amid Political Uncertainty
Canada-Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau Struggles After NDP Pulls Backing. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced a significant setback on Wednesday as the New Democratic Party (NDP), which had been supporting his minority Liberal government, withdrew its automatic backing. This development forces Trudeau to seek new alliances to maintain governance.
Trudeau has vowed to continue his government’s work and advance social programs despite the NDP’s decision. He dismissed speculation about early elections, even as Jagmeet Singh, the NDP leader, announced that he was “ripping up” the 2022 agreement that had ensured NDP support for Trudeau’s government.
The NDP’s withdrawal means Trudeau now needs to secure support from other opposition members to survive confidence votes in the House of Commons. This comes at a time when current polls suggest he would face a significant defeat if an election were held today. Canadian law mandates that an election must occur by the end of October 2025.

Trudeau, speaking at a school where he was discussing expanded lunch programs, expressed hope that the NDP would remain focused on delivering for Canadians rather than engaging in political disputes.
First elected in November 2015, Trudeau has recently struggled against criticism from the opposition Conservatives, who accuse him of failing to address high inflation and the housing crisis.
Singh has criticized Trudeau for not adequately addressing grocery prices and has announced his intention to run for prime minister in the next election. Singh’s frustration reflects broader voter discontent, with polls showing both Trudeau and the NDP experiencing declining support.
The 2022 deal between the Liberals and the NDP had committed the latter to support Trudeau’s government until mid-2025 in exchange for increased social spending. With the NDP now reassessing its position, it may choose to support or oppose the Liberals on a case-by-case basis.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has called for an early election, criticizing the Liberal-NDP coalition for exacerbating living costs. As Parliament resumes on September 16, the Conservatives will have the opportunity to propose a confidence vote, which could determine the government’s future.
The upcoming budget update will be a crucial moment for Trudeau’s administration. A failure to secure legislative support for the budget could trigger a new election.
