AFC Postpones Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia Until Late December
Regional tensions and travel problems force the change, and the new tournament dates now need approval from Fifa.
KUALA LUMPUR – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – The AFC postpones Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia, shifting the tournament from January to December. The Asian Football Confederation announced the decision on Tuesday.
The AFC said “exceptional circumstances” in the region left it with no other choice. It also pointed to serious travel problems and heavy logistical challenges.
The event was first set for January 7 to February 5 next year. The new dates are December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028.
These dates are not final yet. The AFC will send them to Fifa for approval.
The organising committee made the decision after “extensive discussions and close consultation” with Saudi officials. The AFC said the delay is in the best interest of teams, officials, fans and other groups.
This news comes after a difficult few weeks for sport in Saudi Arabia. Several big events have been cancelled or postponed after Houthi attacks on the country.
Last month, local organisers said the Asian Cup was still “on schedule”. Even so, worries about the tournament kept growing.
Jeddah, Riyadh and Al Khobar are still set to host the month-long competition.
The new timeline gives organisers almost one extra year to prepare. It also gives teams and supporters more time to plan their trips.
Fans across Asia now wait for Fifa’s answer. A final schedule should follow once the approval is given.
