Former coach says selectors chief must "look in the mirror" as team plays scared cricket
KARACHI – (Staff Reporter/Web Desk) – Aaqib Javed Gillespie tensions have burst into the open, with former Pakistan coach Jason Gillespie saying the chairman of selectors needs to take a hard look at himself.
Gillespie’s comments came just days after Pakistan made a surprise call. The board removed head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and pace-bowling chief Umar Gul. Seven players were also sent home from England mid-tour.
The Australian coach did not hold back. He said the national side looks like it is playing scared, and the players deserve better treatment than this.
He pointed to captain Salman Ali Agha as a clear example. Agha led the team in the first Test, then was dropped and put on a flight home before the third match even started.
Gillespie also pushed back at claims that he and former white-ball coach Gary Kirsten were somehow responsible for Pakistan’s struggles. He called Javed’s selection approach inconsistent, saying decisions change almost daily.
Adding to the criticism, Gillespie said players found out about their sackings through friends, family, and news reports rather than a direct conversation with team management.
Pakistan lost the opening two Tests against England by heavy margins. The final match of the series begins at Edgbaston on September 9, with the squad now under interim charge of Mike Hesson and Ashley Noffke.
Other former Pakistan figures, including Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik, have echoed similar concerns about how the situation was handled.
