Sindh announces holiday for all educational institutions

Sindh Government has declared a public holiday for schools and colleges on February 26, on account of Shab-e-Barat.

Karachi: Sindh announces holiday for all educational institutions. “In pursuance of the decision of the Steering Committee meeting all the public and private educational institutions under the administrative control of College Education Department shall remain closed on Monday (February 26, 2024) on account of Shab-e-Baraat (15th Shaban),” the notification issued by the  Education Department.

Meanwhile, Muslims in Pakistan and parts of the world observe Shab e Barat every year. The night commonly dubbed as The Night of Fortune and Forgiveness comes in the run-up to the start of the Holy month of Ramadan.

The believers observe the night with religious spirit as the faithful offered nawafil in mosques, making special prayers for unity, prosperity, security, and restoration of peace in the country and the prosperity and unity of the entire Muslim Ummah.

Some traditions call it the night of blessings and accountability when Almighty Allah makes mass judgments regarding the next year’s lives, deaths, bestowments, and blessings.

Celebrated on the 15th of Shaban, Shab e Barat night or the Night of forgiveness is a significant Islamic festival. On the night, Muslims worldwide ask forgiveness for their sins from the all-merciful Allah. Additionally, the night can be used to seek mercy for the deceased and ill family members. It is believed that Allah decides the fortune and the future of every creature of the earth on this night. Muslims across the world celebrate the night differently depending upon cultural diversity and local traditions.

Shab e Barat meaning

The literal meaning of Shab e Barat can be translated to the night of Atonement. It has numerous names as per the different cultures worldwide, such as Cheragh e Barat, Barat Night, Berat Kandili, or Nisfu Syaaban. Due to the virtues of the night, it is one of the holiest nights in Islam. People use the night to atone for the sins of their ancestors and prevent them from hellfire.
