Islamabad Traffic Police achievements in 2023

To curb traffic law violations and instill a sense of responsibility among citizens, penalties for offenses were amplified.
In a series of accomplishments aimed at bolstering public safety and ensuring a secure road environment, the Islamabad Capital Police (Traffic Unit) marked a successful year in 2023. The endeavors undertaken during this period reflect a commitment to facilitating citizens and upholding the principles of road safety in the city.
A notable achievement was the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Traffic Headquarters at Faizabad, a strategic move to enhance operational efficiency and coordination. In a bid to foster inclusivity, the establishment of a women’s driving center was a commendable step towards empowering women in the field of transportation.
To curb traffic law violations and instill a sense of responsibility among citizens, penalties for offenses were amplified. The implementation of an internationally recognized driving license in two languages aimed to cater to a diverse demographic. The integration of the E-Challan system with criminal records and advanced notifications for license expirations exemplified the force’s embrace of technology for enhanced governance.
Throughout the year, the Islamabad Capital Police Traffic Unit took stringent action against 8,86,698 vehicles and motorcycles for traffic violations. Legal measures were initiated against 1,151 individuals involved in severe traffic transgressions. In a resolute stance against errant behavior, 1,587 driving licenses were suspended, and permits for 419 public transport vehicles were revoked. Additionally, 17,420 cars and 38,000 motorcycles engaged in severe violations were impounded, emphasizing the force’s commitment to maintaining order on the roads.
Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, the Islamabad Capital City Police Officer (ICCPO), emphasized that the overarching goal of these initiatives was to ensure compliance with traffic laws, leading to a substantial 12% reduction in accidents. The Traffic Unit issued an impressive 48,347 new driving licenses, renewed 20,375 licenses upon expiry, and granted 95,333 learner permits, contributing to a more educated and responsible driving community.
Despite challenges, including ongoing construction projects at various locations, the Traffic Police officers displayed professionalism and dedication. They played pivotal roles in maintaining traffic flow at construction sites, ensuring minimal disruption and inconvenience to citizens.
Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan acknowledged the Islamabad Capital Police (Traffic Unit) as a role model for other provinces, attributing its success to a professional and proactive approach. Given the daily influx of vehicles in Islamabad, the task of managing traffic flow while enforcing laws is undeniably challenging, yet the force has risen to the occasion admirably.

Looking ahead to 2024, Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan expressed determination to collaborate with the government to address deficiencies, including the need for an additional 2,600 officers and officials, residential facilities, and more vehicles. The goal is to fortify the force’s capabilities and deliver even better services to the citizens of Islamabad, ensuring a safer and more efficient road network.
