IHC takes up Imran Khan’s plea against conviction
PTI chief discharged from murder charges – lawyer
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will today again hear the petition filed by former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan for suspension of his sentence in the Toshakhana reference,
A two-member bench of the IHC, comprising Chief Justice (CJ) Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, will hear the case.
Latif Khosa, who is representing the PTI chairman, will appear in the court. On the last hearing, the court had directed the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) lawyer to complete his arguments in the case.
The court will start the hearing after 1:00 PM in the afternoon today.
During the last hearing, ECP’s legal counsel Amjad Parvaiz did not appear before the court, citing ill-health. His assistant advocate requested the bench for an adjournment saying that for the last eight months, they never sought any adjournment. He said that doctors had suggested Anjad Parvaiz bed rest.
At this, Chief Justice Aamer Farooq said that the request for suspension of sentence is now at a critical stage and the arguments would have been completed in 15-20 minutes. The assistant lawyer then replied that “such a situation can occur with anyone.” At this, Khosa responded, “No, this cannot happen with anyone. I was unwell yesterday but I still appeared.”
The IHC Chief Justice observed that what the trial court did was wrong. He added, “We will adjourn this case till Monday and even if no one appears, we will decide on it [that day].”
Khosa asked, “Then, will you keep PTI chairman behind the bars for another three days?” Then, he left the rostrum in protest, saying, “Then we will not appear before the court. You can do what you want.”
Later, the IHC bench accepted the ECP lawyer’s plea and adjourned the hearing till Monday (today) for further hearing.
Meanwhile,
A Pakistani court on Monday dismissed murder charges against former prime minister and PTI chairman, his lawyer said.
“God be praised,” said the lawyer, Naeem Panjutha on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, adding the charges related to the murder of a lawyer in southern city of Quetta had been dismissed by a court.
The PTI chief, who was charged for the murder in June, has been facing over 100 cases since his ouster in a parliamentary vote of confidence in April, 2022, after he fell out with the country’s powerful military.
A high court in Islamabad is also due on Monday to give a ruling on an appeal filed by Khan seeking to suspend his conviction in a graft case.
