Australia’s Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement From International Cricket
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell ends his international career after missing selection for the upcoming T20 series against England.
Australia – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – Australia’s Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from international cricket after being left out of the squad for the upcoming T20 series against England. The 38-year-old Australian star has decided to end his international journey after years of entertaining cricket fans around the world.
Maxwell confirmed his decision on Tuesday during an appearance on the Final Word podcast. He described the moment as both sad and expected, explaining that he had discussed his international future with Australian selectors several times.
The experienced all-rounder had already retired from one-day international cricket last year. He also played his final Test match in 2017. However, he remained interested in continuing his T20 international career.
His last appearance for Australia came during the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in February. Since then, he has not been selected for international matches.
Australian selectors overlooked Maxwell for the T20 series against Bangladesh in June. They also left him out of the squad announced on Monday for the upcoming series against England in November.
Maxwell understood that Australia wanted to give younger players more opportunities. He also accepted the team’s decision to focus on building a strong squad for future international competitions.
The Australian star revealed that he had hoped to receive one final opportunity to represent his country at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against England. However, that chance did not come.
During his international career, Maxwell played 130 T20 matches for Australia and scored 2,897 runs at an impressive strike rate of 154.42. He finished as Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in T20 internationals, behind David Warner and Aaron Finch.
His one-day international record was also impressive. He played 149 ODIs and scored 3,990 runs, making him an important part of Australia’s batting line-up.
Although Maxwell played only seven Test matches, his aggressive batting and ability to change a match made him a special player in Australian cricket.
Apart from international cricket, Maxwell has also ended his first-class career with Victoria. However, he is not leaving the game completely.
Fans will continue to watch him play for the Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s Big Bash League. His experience and attacking style will remain valuable in T20 cricket.
Maxwell also expressed his gratitude for representing Australia throughout his career. He said that when he first joined Victoria in 2009, he would have happily accepted a career like the one he achieved.
His retirement closes an important chapter in Australian cricket. From powerful sixes to match-winning performances, Maxwell has given fans plenty of exciting memories.
