Ukraine Reports Improved Starlink Connectivity Amid Washington Dispute
Kyiv and Washington Face Renewed Tensions Over Starlink Access
WASHINGTON/KYIV:(Web Desk) Technology billionaire Elon Musk on Saturday accused Ukraine’s military of violating Starlink’s terms of service by using the satellite communications network to carry out offensive drone strikes, saying the loophole had been closed last week.
“Ukraine military violated Starlink terms of service and used it for offensive drone strikes to kill people,” Musk wrote on X. He added that the loophole allowing such use had been addressed.
In a separate post, Musk stressed that Starlink was designed as a civilian communications system rather than a tool for lethal operations. He warned that violations of its terms could lead to the suspension of services.
Despite his criticism, Musk acknowledged Starlink’s crucial role in Ukraine’s defence against Russian forces, describing it as an essential communications network that is difficult to jam or destroy. He warned that shutting down the service could cause Ukraine’s frontline positions to collapse rapidly.
Musk’s latest remarks come amid renewed tensions over the satellite network, which has become a vital component of Ukraine’s military communications and battlefield coordination since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Ukraine relies on SpaceX’s civilian Starlink network and the military-oriented Starshield system to support communications, drone operations and other battlefield activities as it defends itself against Russian missile and drone attacks.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Defence Minister Yevgeniy Khmara said monitoring systems had recorded an improvement in Starlink and Starshield performance, with connection speeds exceeding 400 kilometres per hour, according to his statement on Saturday.
Khmara said the restored performance was particularly important for frontline troops, drone operations, logistics and communications. He added that the recovery had begun overnight and credited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s firm position on the issue.
The satellite network has become a source of friction between Kyiv and Washington. Zelensky had accused the United States of indirectly assisting Russia by failing to warn Ukraine about incoming missile attacks and by restricting Starlink speeds, which he said had weakened Ukraine’s ability to respond.
Khmara said Zelensky’s position was beginning to produce results, describing the improvement as significant for frontline logistics and Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian rocket-powered drones.
Musk has repeatedly shifted his position on Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began in 2022. He has also argued that responsibility for disruptions to the satellite network rests with the US government rather than SpaceX.
The latest developments highlight Ukraine’s dependence on satellite communications for military coordination and the broader geopolitical tensions surrounding access to privately operated technology during wartime.
