Iran Sets Seven Conditions for Reopening Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN: (News Desk)  – Iran has conveyed seven conditions to the United States for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, while making it clear that the strategic waterway will not be reopened under any agreement reached with Oman.

According to Russian media reports, Tehran has communicated its conditions to Washington through intermediaries as diplomatic efforts continue over access to the strategically important maritime route.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said a meeting would be held in Muscat tomorrow, with representatives from Iraq and several Gulf countries also expected to participate.

Under the proposed arrangements, vessels entering the Persian Gulf would use a route passing entirely through Iranian waters. The exit route, meanwhile, would partly pass through Iranian waters.

Tehran has stipulated that all transit through these routes would be conducted under Iranian protocols. It has also maintained that the southern route, whose reopening has been demanded by the United States, will remain closed.

The conditions suggest that Iran intends to maintain significant control over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz as negotiations over reopening the vital waterway continue.
