Russia Resumes Kyiv Strikes After Three-Day Pause

KYIV: (News Desk) – A fresh wave of Russian strikes hit Kyiv early Tuesday, with powerful explosions reported across the Ukrainian capital after a three-day pause in attacks.

The strikes sparked fires and set off car alarms in several parts of the city. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least six people were wounded, while emergency teams responded to damaged buildings and burning vehicles.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported a missile attack and authorities urged residents to remain in shelters as air defence systems were activated. A five-storey residential building in the Solomianskyi district was damaged, while vehicles caught fire in the Podilskyi district. Officials also reported that people were trapped inside a residential building.

The attack came shortly after a temporary halt ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin expired. The pause coincided with visits by US President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend.

Air raid alerts were active across around a dozen Ukrainian regions by early Tuesday. Reports monitoring the conflict also indicated that Russia had been moving ballistic missiles and repositioning heavy bombers to locations closer to Ukraine.

Poland separately announced that its military had begun aviation operations in response to the latest Russian attack.

US Peace Efforts

Despite the renewed fighting, US efforts to revive negotiations showed some signs of movement. Witkoff said Monday that substantive progress had been made during discussions with Russian and Ukrainian officials and suggested that three-way peace talks could potentially resume.

Witkoff said on X that President Trump was working to stop the fighting and achieve a lasting peace.

Witkoff and Kushner met Putin in Moscow on Saturday before travelling to Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Kremlin has said it has not ruled out renewed three-way negotiations, although no venue or date has yet been agreed.

Zelensky said his team was coordinating its next steps following discussions with the US envoys and European officials. A senior Ukrainian official said Washington had presented new proposals aimed at ending the conflict, but details of the plan were not publicly disclosed.

Zelensky: Russia Ready to Negotiate

Zelensky later said Russia had shown a willingness to negotiate during the discussions with the US representatives. He told Axios that Washington was seeking to reduce tensions before the arrival of another difficult winter.

Ukraine has faced repeated Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure during previous winters, disrupting electricity and heating supplies for millions of people.

According to Zelensky, the US proposals included discussions concerning energy facilities, grain shipments and oil and gas exports. He said Washington’s approach was intended to bring Moscow and Kyiv back to negotiations and create conditions for progress toward peace.

However, Zelensky warned that Russia could continue fighting through the winter, saying Moscow may believe the harsh conditions could weaken Ukraine.

Previous rounds of negotiations have remained deadlocked, particularly over territorial issues in eastern Ukraine, where Russia maintains claims over occupied areas.
