Babar Azam Backs Merit Ahead of Second Test

LONDON —(Sports Desk) – Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has made it clear that team interests will take priority over seniority as Pakistan prepares for the second Test, saying any player who is best suited to the team will be selected.

Speaking at a press conference in London, Babar said there was nothing wrong with leaving out an experienced player if the team’s requirements demanded it. He stressed that no member of the squad should be considered indispensable.

Discussing Pakistan’s batting concerns, Babar acknowledged that wickets have sometimes fallen in quick succession after strong partnerships. He said the team is working to address the problem, particularly situations in which a new batter arrives at the crease and the established batter soon loses their wicket.

Babar also commented on the conditions at Lord’s, saying the pitch appeared to have a grassy covering. He added that the final playing XI would be decided later, with selection based on the team’s requirements.

Addressing wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, Babar said there was no pressure on him and emphasized that players are sometimes backed because of the confidence the team management has in them.

The Pakistan captain also highlighted the collective responsibility of the playing XI. He said bowlers cannot be expected to take all 20 wickets while the batters fail to contribute, stressing that every player has a role to play in Test cricket.

Babar confirmed that he is fully fit and will feature in the Lord’s Test. He is also aiming to maintain his impressive record at the historic venue and complete a hat-trick of Test victories at Lord’s.
