Iyer Calls India’s Record 125-Run T20 Defeat ‘Atrocious’

Nottingham: (Web Desk) – India captain Shreyas Iyer described his team’s performance as “atrocious” after England handed the T20 world champions their heaviest-ever defeat in the format, crushing them by 125 runs at Trent Bridge.

England posted 201 for 7 after being asked to bat first, while India were bowled out for just 76 runs inside 12 overs. The defeat marked India’s biggest loss by runs in T20 cricket, surpassing their previous 80-run defeat against New Zealand in Wellington in 2019.

England’s pace duo Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue dismantled India’s batting order with a fiery new-ball spell. Tongue returned career-best figures of 4 for 28, while Archer took 3 for 29 as England moved 2-0 ahead in the four-match series.

Speaking after the match, Iyer said such a heavy defeat was unacceptable.

“It was atrocious. I can’t use a better word. Losing by such a big margin isn’t acceptable,” Iyer said.

He added that India failed to execute their plans with both bat and ball, particularly during the chase.

“Hard lengths helped the bowlers on this wicket, but we did not execute enough. When you are chasing, you have to set patterns for how to chase. We fell short and our execution was awful,” he said.

England captain Harry Brook praised his side’s disciplined performance and credited opener Phil Salt for setting up the total.

“Salty played a mega innings. To get to 200 on a tricky surface was a phenomenal effort,” Brook said.

Phil Salt scored 70 runs, while Jos Buttler made 36. Sam Curran remained unbeaten on 41 to help England cross the 200-run mark.

India’s innings fell apart early as Archer and Tongue repeatedly troubled the top order with pace and bounce. Archer dismissed teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Iyer and Axar Patel, leaving India struggling at 52 for 5 after five overs.

Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube and Harshit Rana also failed to make an impact. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid picked up two late wickets as India narrowly avoided recording their lowest-ever T20 total of 74.

England can seal the series with another win in the fourth T20 at Bristol on Thursday. Despite the heavy loss, Iyer said India still had an opportunity to respond strongly.

“It is a great opportunity to come back strong and not dwell on what has happened in the past. We have played awful cricket, but there is a lot to learn as well,” he said.
