Pakistan India Prisoner Exchange: Lists Shared Today

Pakistan India Prisoner Exchange Held Under 2008 Consular Deal

Pakistan and India – (Web Desk) – Pakistan and India carried out their scheduled Pakistan India prisoner exchange of lists on Wednesday, sharing details of citizens held in each other’s jails. The move falls under the 2008 Consular Access Agreement, which requires both sides to swap this information twice a year.

The Foreign Office confirmed that Pakistan handed over a list of 250 Indian prisoners currently in its custody. This includes 52 civilians and 198 fishermen, and the list was shared with the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

In return, India gave Pakistan a list of 439 people who are either confirmed or believed to be Pakistani nationals held in Indian jails. Of these, 386 are civilian prisoners while 53 are fishermen.

Pakistan also pushed India to release and send back 97 Pakistani prisoners who have already finished their jail terms. This group includes 64 civilians and 33 fishermen whose nationality has already been verified.

The Foreign Office asked India to keep all Pakistani and suspected Pakistani prisoners safe while they wait for release. Islamabad also called for quicker consular access so that the nationality of remaining prisoners can be confirmed without delay.

This exchange happens every year on January 1 and July 1. Both countries also share lists of their nuclear sites on January 1 under a separate agreement that bars them from targeting each other’s nuclear facilities.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan will keep working to bring back all its citizens held in Indian jails.
