India Releases Water into Chenab Without Prior Notice
River inflows increased from 41,000 cusecs on Sunday to 62,000 cusecs
ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – India has once again released water into the River Chenab without prior notification, triggering concerns in Pakistan after water levels rose significantly at Head Marala, according to local media reports on Monday.
Reports said India opened two gates of the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River after initially releasing additional water from the Dul Hasti Dam to accommodate inflows from upstream reservoirs.
Sources said the exact volume of water discharged by India has not been disclosed.
Pakistan’s Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) confirmed that water levels at Head Marala have been rising steadily. River inflows increased from 41,000 cusecs on Sunday to 62,000 cusecs on Monday, while outflows surged from 14,000 cusecs to 35,000 cusecs.
The FFD warned that if the inflow continues to rise, a low-level flood could develop at Head Marala within the next 24 hours.
