DeepMind Rejects Union Recognition Request From UK Employees
DeepMind declines union recognition while offering mediation talks with employees
NEW YORK: (Web Desk) – Google DeepMind announced on Wednesday that it has declined a request from UK-based employees to voluntarily recognise newly formed unions, though the company said it is prepared to begin formal discussions through mediation channels.
A spokesperson for Google confirmed that the company rejected the unions’ request for collective bargaining rights related to pay, working hours, and leave policies. However, DeepMind has offered to engage in talks through the UK’s Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), describing it as the standard next step in the process.
Earlier this month, employees sought official recognition of the Communication Workers Union and Unite the Union due to growing concerns over the potential military applications of artificial intelligence technology developed by the company.
Union representatives said a significant number of DeepMind employees have become increasingly uneasy about the direction of AI projects, particularly regarding the reported use of Google technology by the United States and Israeli militaries.
Among the workers’ demands are calls to halt the use of Google AI in military operations, restore previous commitments against building AI-powered weapons or surveillance systems, establish an independent ethics oversight body, and allow employees to opt out of projects that conflict with their personal moral beliefs.
Google Warns Quantum “Q-Day” Threat To Global Security
The concerns intensified after the Pentagon recently announced agreements with Google and several other AI firms to integrate advanced AI tools into classified military systems. Prior to the deal, more than 600 Google employees reportedly urged the company not to proceed due to fears the technology could contribute to harmful military operations.
The debate echoes similar employee activism in 2018, when internal protests successfully pushed Google to withdraw from Project Maven, a Pentagon initiative focused on incorporating artificial intelligence into drone operations.
