CAIR Terrorist Designation Republican Move Sparks Backlash From Muslim Americans

Republican "CAIR Terrorist Designation" Push Fuels Fear Among Muslim Americans

Washington – (Web Desk) – Republican governors in Florida and Texas labeled CAIR a “terrorist” group, a move that Muslim Americans and civil rights advocates say is part of a broader effort to target and marginalize Muslim communities across the United States.

Congressional hearings titled “Sharia-Free America” have added fuel to the fire. House Republicans held the hearing to argue that political Islam and sharia law conflict with the US Constitution. Critics, however, say there is zero evidence that any mainstream Muslim organization in America has ever pushed for sharia to replace US law.

Representative Chip Roy claimed that those promoting political Islam want to replace American culture entirely. Democrats pushed back. Representative Jamie Raskin called the hearings a distraction that undermines religious freedom for all Americans.

The US Council of Muslim Organisations, representing more than 50 Muslim groups, strongly condemned what it described as the government being used as a weapon against American Muslims. CAIR’s Maryland director, Zainab Chaudry, said these hearings are not about the Constitution at all. They are about making Muslim Americans feel like permanent outsiders.

The numbers tell a troubling story. CAIR recorded 8,683 anti-Muslim and anti-Arab complaints in 2025 alone, the highest number since the organization started tracking data back in 1996. A separate April study found that anti-Muslim posts by Republican lawmakers and governors topped 1,100 in just a few months.

Experts link the rise in Islamophobia to several factors, including the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, aggressive anti-immigration policies, white nationalist movements, and tensions tied to Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.

Muslim civil rights groups are calling on Americans to reject the politics of fear and stand up for the constitutional right to religious freedom that protects everyone, regardless of faith.
