Pakistan Tuna Exports Europe Set to Reach $200 Million

How a New IOTC Quota Is Transforming Pakistan Tuna Exports to Europe

Pakistan – (Web Desk) – Pakistan tuna exports to Europe are getting a major push as the government eyes a $200 million boost for its tuna sector. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, shared this exciting news on World Tuna Day. He said the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) has given Pakistan a fresh fishing quota of 25,000 metric tons. This includes 15,000 tons of Yellowfin Tuna and 10,000 tons of Skipjack Tuna.

The IOTC is a global body with 30 member countries. It works under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Its main job is to manage tuna fish in the Indian Ocean in a safe and sustainable way. It does this through scientific research, setting catch limits, and creating rules for responsible fishing.

Minister Junaid Chaudhry called this moment a “turning point” for Pakistan’s tuna industry. He pointed out that Pakistan already catches over 45,000 metric tons of tuna every year. However, a large portion of this catch never enters the formal economy because of unregulated and illegal fishing activities. The government is now working hard to fix this problem.

To tackle illegal fishing, new rules and monitoring systems are being put in place. Modern longlining technology is also being introduced across Pakistan’s fishing fleet. This method is cleaner and more targeted than the old, harmful fishing techniques that were damaging the ocean.

On top of that, Pakistan’s fishing ports are being upgraded. These improvements are already showing results — exports to European countries are rising. European markets are known for their high quality standards, and Pakistan is now positioning itself to meet those demands.

This is a big step forward for Pakistan’s maritime economy. With better technology, stronger rules, and improved ports, the country is ready to turn its tuna resources into real economic growth.
