Fourteen infants die as blaze tears through Islamabad's largest public hospital

Islamabad – (Staff Reporter/Web Desk) – The PIMS hospital fire Islamabad newborns tragedy has left the whole country in shock. Early Thursday morning, flames swept through the Mother and Child Health ward at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. At least fourteen newborn babies lost their lives.

The fire broke out around 7am on the third floor. Officials say an air conditioner exploded and sparked the blaze. High oxygen levels in the ward helped the flames spread fast.

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal confirmed the cause. He said the explosion happened without warning. Staff had little time to react before smoke filled the ward.

Grieving parents shared painful stories outside the hospital. A mother named Javeria said no doctor or nurse was present at the time. She said her baby’s body, along with others, was carried away in boxes. Families were not allowed to see their children one last time.

“It is not God’s will. I don’t accept it,” she said through tears.

Another parent, Mudasir, said the building had no fire safety setup. He said all exits were shut except one door. That single door was the only way for families to reach their children.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acted quickly after the incident. He ordered a full investigation into the fire. He also suspended the health secretary from duty. The government has promised accountability for the failure.

This is one of the deadliest hospital fires in Pakistan’s recent history. Public hospitals across the country often lack proper resources. Many watchdog groups have long criticized poor safety standards at state-run facilities.

News of the fire quickly spread beyond Pakistan’s borders. World leaders and governments began sending messages of grief and support.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry expressed deep sorrow for the victims’ families. The ministry said the kingdom stands with Pakistan’s people during this painful time.

Turkey, Iran, and Syria also sent heartfelt condolences. China’s embassy called the loss deeply saddening. The United Kingdom described the tragedy as heartbreaking.

France, Spain, Nigeria, and Afghanistan added their voices too. Each nation offered sympathy to the grieving families of Islamabad.

PIMS is one of the busiest public hospitals in the capital. It serves over a million residents in Islamabad. The hospital recently made headlines when former PM Imran Khan visited for a checkup.

For now, the ward remains sealed off from the public. Investigators are working to understand exactly what went wrong. Parents outside the hospital continue to wait for answers.

This heartbreaking event has renewed calls for better hospital safety. Many are demanding stronger fire protection in government hospitals nationwide. The loss of these newborns has touched hearts far beyond Pakistan.
