Israeli drone strike kills at least 10 near central Gaza school

Ten lives lost as Israeli drones strike a crowded Gaza neighborhood where families had taken shelter in a local school

CAIRO – (Web Desk) – At least 10 people were killed and several others hurt on Monday after Israeli forces launched an air strike outside a school in central Gaza. The school was sheltering Palestinians who had already been forced from their homes. Health officials confirmed the deaths.

The trouble started before the strike. A group backed by Israel attacked the school. Witnesses and medics say the group was trying to grab people from inside. Some Palestinians fought back to protect themselves.

While the fighting was going on near the Maghazi refugee camp, Israeli drones fired two missiles into the area. At least 10 people died and many more were hurt.

It is still not clear how many of the victims were civilians. Most of them lived in a packed neighborhood full of people who had nowhere else to go.

An eyewitness named Ahmed al-Maghazi described what happened. He said the armed group attacked first. Then Israeli forces opened fire on the residents themselves. “The residents tried to defend their homes but the occupation forces targeted them directly,” he said.

Later that day, one of the militia leaders posted a video claiming they had killed around five Hamas members. Hamas did not respond. The group calls these militias “Israeli collaborators.”

Monday was a deadly day beyond just that one strike. Earlier, an Israeli air strike hit a motorbike in Gaza City and killed one person. A child traveling with him was also hurt. Later, soldiers opened fire on a car in central Gaza and killed another person.

By the end of the day at least 12 Palestinians had been killed.

The Palestinian group Hamas, which has run Gaza since 2007, and Israel have traded blame over violations of the ceasefire that kicked off in October.

The Gaza health ministry says Israeli fire has killed at least 700 people since the ceasefire began. Israel says four soldiers have been killed in Gaza over the same period.

The violence comes as Hamas has continued to resist relinquishing its weapons, a major obstacle in talks to implement the next steps in US President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan for Gaza.

On Sunday, Hamas’ armed wing said that discussing the group’s disarmament before Israel fully implements the first phase of Trump’s Gaza plan was an attempt to continue what it called a genocide against the Palestinian people.

Israel’s ensuing two-year campaign killed more than 72,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to Gazan health authorities. The offensive spread famine, reduced most of the strip to rubble, and displaced the majority of its population.
