ISLAMABAD: World-renowned tennis player and three-time Grand Slam singles champion Stan Wawrinka has announced that the 2026 season will be the final chapter of his professional tennis career.

The Swiss star stated that he wants to conclude his long and illustrious career in the “best possible way.” On social media, Wawrinka wrote, “Every book has an ending, and now it’s time for me to write the last chapter of my professional tennis career. 2026 will be my final year.” His announcement has evoked strong emotions among tennis fans worldwide.

Turning 41 in March, Wawrinka carved a unique identity in men’s tennis during its golden era. He proved his mettle by winning the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015, and the US Open in 2016, establishing himself among greats like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.

Over his career, Wawrinka has claimed a total of 16 ATP titles, with his last title coming in Geneva in 2017. He reached a career-high world ranking of No. 3 in 2014, but injuries in recent years have impacted his performance, currently placing him at No. 157.

With 582 tour-level match victories, Wawrinka ranks fourth among active players, behind only Gael Monfils, who is also expected to retire next year.

Wawrinka also achieved Olympic glory, winning a doubles gold medal with Roger Federer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and played a key role in leading Switzerland to its first Davis Cup title in 2014.

He will kick off his final season at the United Cup, starting January 2 in Perth, giving fans one last opportunity to see him in action on the court.
