The picturesque island of Barbados witnessed a historic moment for Pakistan during the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) as Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan was honoured with the “Commonwealth Parliamentarian of the Year Award.”
This recognition is far more than just an individual achievement; it marks a milestone in Pakistan’s parliamentary history. For the first time ever, a Speaker from Pakistan and indeed from Asia has received this prestigious international award. The honour reflects a simple truth: when vision is clear, intent is sincere, and democratic spirit is strong, the world takes notice.
The award ceremony took place at the official residence of the Prime Minister of Barbados, attended by parliamentary leaders from across the globe. Amid the distinguished gathering, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan proudly raised Pakistan’s flag, earning applause for the country and its democratic institutions.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) brings together over 180 parliaments from more than 50 countries, making this recognition for Pakistan’s provincial assembly a matter of national pride.
During his tenure as Speaker, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has transformed the Punjab Assembly into a more transparent, efficient, and modern legislative body. His leadership has been praised for enhancing the quality of legislation, reviving parliamentary traditions, and aligning assembly practices with international standards. This distinction also validates the Pakistan Muslim League (N) leadership’s decision to appoint Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan as Speaker. It reflects the party’s vision and commitment to rewarding loyal, capable, and principled members who embody democratic values.
